Defense is the best offense

There's a saying in sport "offense is the best defense" but the Bible makes an opposite point, it's not talking about sport of course, but rather, spiritual warfare.

It comes in Ephesians 6:
Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. (Ephesians 6:11-18 NIV)
Yes, this is the armor of God passage, I've often complained that far too often we do this passage a great injustice by using this passage just for a Children's ministry craft rather than teaching for all ages. One of the key things is to notice how many elements that make up the armor of god are defensive (belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, feet with readiness from the gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation) and only one is an attack weapon (sword of the Spirit). Now I know that yes you can use a shield for attack, but it's main purpose is defense and this should speak to us.

We know that the word of God will stand against whatever your put in front of it, so we don't need to go around beating people down because of it, our warfare is with the devil, hence the sword is of the spirit, he fights for us! Our work should be a defense, we are called to defend the Gospel against allegations, and it is through the defense that we will win the battle
