Jesus is number one

Jesus being number one means a lot of things because he's first in many ways. Jesus should be our #1 priority, but also he is the "firstborn of all creation" not that he was a creation but that 'the Son' was integral to it, it was this phrase that tripped up a number of people in the early church struggled with and we see Paul address this issue in Colossians 1.

Paul says of The Son:
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (Colossians 1:15-17 NIV)
Saying that The Son is the image doesn't mean that the son is an imperfect copy of God, but rather that The Son is God, he is exactly like God and there is no difference in him. Because he created as well, everything was created through The Son, creation is something only God can do and The Son was creator as well, everything comes through Jesus and is for Jesus, and is only through the Son that things hold together. The Son is creator, therefore, the Son is God.

Paul then talks more about what The Son does:
And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. (Colossians 18-20 NIV)
Paul talks about a concept we know, the idea that Jesus is the head of the church, but he goes in to more details as to why. Jesus is the head because he was the "firstborn from among the dead" it is through Jesus that we get access to eternal life and as such he's the first there too. It puts Jesus at the pinnacle, through his sacrifice on the cross, he brings peace. Not world peace but peace between us and God.

Paul explains this peace more:
Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— 23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant. (Colossians 1:21-23 NIV)
We were enemies with God, we didn't always realise this fact, but they way we lived (our 'evil behaviour') showed it. The only way to solve this was through God bringing in a sacrifice to make atonement for us, which he did through Christ's death so that we can come before God as Holy & Blameless.

Christ stands before us as our way to God but also the way to our very existence, whether people choose to acknowledge him or not is irrelevant. We need to come before Jesus and praise him, lay all our other things at his feet and follow him with our lives in gratitude for all he has done for us.
